Today is the day that Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas, the last lab on the planet to process Kodachrome, stops developing the iconic film forever. When Kodak stopped producing the film last year, they gave me the last roll. When I finished shooting the final frames, I hand-delivered it to Parsons. Here are a few of those last 36 frames

I suppose all of us have changed our photo taking to digital processing. It is so much cheaper to look at our photos and process or print only the chosen ones! Heck, we can even print our own now on our tabletop printers! I use to develop two or maybe 3 rolls of film depending what the photos were taken for and to share with my family or friends who might be in my photos not knowing if they were even good or not but cheaper than to pick out a couple and have re-prints made. I started this in the 1970's when my husband and I moved away from the state we both grew up in. We had the only grand-daughter of both parents and we wanted to be sure and share her growing up and fun experiences. She was only two years old when we had to move due to a job requirement of the railroad where my husband worked.
I guess we moved from a 35 mm camera to digital sometime in the early 1990's as I can remember. I had a Canon camera, jus an easy point and shoot as I am not good at learning focal details needed to be a really good photographer although I have always carried my camera with me and making memories of whatever we were doing at the time. I have been lucky to travel quite a bit as our daughter grew up with and without her as she did not like our Colorado trips we took a lot in the 1990's. We loved the snow and to ski where she preferred to stay home with friends and this started a trend. We also traveled in our 4 wheel drive jeep in the 1980's - 90's and she never enjoyed that either. She did go with us in the jeep, she just did not care for the wood- trekking trips we made off-road daily and over-night trips. We even returned to Colorado in the summers to find the old gold mine roads up high in the mountains.
I know my photos were not even great quality as they still are not but they gave me the pleasure of my memories and I still have many, many filled albums of years of treasured moments. I could never capture the mountains like I could see in my mind, but it got my started in the right direction.
My point in this post is that so many hours were filled with seeing travel photos of friend's trips in our many clubs we joined over the years. I have always been an armchair traveler as far as I can remember. We had our Hiking Club, our Jeep or four-wheel drive travel club, our Sailing and Boating club, Our Department 56 Collectors' Club, The 56 Club Gatherings nationwide, and now I have a 1963 Shasta travel trailer but we do not belong to the vintage Clubs associated with them like the Sisters on the Fly, or Vintage Travel Trailer Clubs. We travel now more to my family's home in Missouri for holidays and just us camping as we are now older and we party less, a lot less. But, I still love hooking her up to start for some destination. Anywhere!
Well, the Kodachrome film many folks used in 35mm cameras is no longer being made and now no longer will be developed. My thought is all the memories on those slides! All those wonderful memories of places visited, family gatherings, special occasions! I wonder how many people will take those old film canisters to be developed or the prints made before the equipment will become obsolete. So much in my lifetime as progressed and improved ( I guess) to make so much equipment obsolete and no longer needed. Look at the Television, Movie, and Music Industries. So much has grown in these areas over the last 50 years, also the space program, How is has grown and now even it is changing to obsolete.
Maybe this is part of the reason I like to recycle or reuse something old for another purpose. The movie reels are now wall art, the cardboard film holders are used in scrapbooking, and I can't even start to think of all we have learned from the space program.
Well, the news of the Kodacrome film just got my head thinking of changes, they just keep happening every day. I was out to Hobby Lobby and Joanne's and saw the many changes to the Cricut machine I bought. It is already so obsolete in many uses that have been improved over the last two years.
Even today I saw a new tool, a " Scor-Pal " for folding paper like the accordion folds for paper medallions is what caught my interest but it is used for so many other things too like making boxes and creating a fold line for anything!

I have been busy getting ready to close my Blue House Booth here in Alabaster where I live and I was ready to also close my booth at the Bama Flea Mall. We looked at several places to have another booth since I have so much extra stuff I own and have invested in. I was drawn between just donating it all and getting back my life like reading a book all day or gardening or whatever. My husband is retired now and I just can't stop everything and do nothing without another try at trying to get some money back on all the items I spent my money on when I was buying like crazy. I do now know I cannot trust myself out alone in the car. I go shopping and through Christmas I told myself it was ok as everyone shopped a little for the holidays. But, I bought a lot more that I ever need at Hobby Lobby and Michael's yesterday. I had no business even going there; but I did! So, now I have even more materials to make things with, mainly jewelry and stamping and embossing inks. I just need to USE THEM! I did start sewing a "Marie Antoinette " doll dress with a dress form I have. Maybe I should just sell the dress forms in my etsy supply shop. I doubt I will ever be able to sew and make enough from them to clear any money so letting someone else sew their own dresses on them might be best. At least I gave it a try.
I also am still hoarding my many books and also got more at the thrift store. I had no business in the books department. I was there to find hangers and maybe a pole for the "Bama Flea and Antique Mall" in Leeds, AL. booth as we decided to open a second shop in the same mall and it was suggested that we move to a combined space with a wall divider but next to each other. So, I have been busy getting our Christmas down and packed away. The reason I was out shopping at Hobby Lobby and Michael's was a tree problem we had. we needed a special light for the tree for the lights to work. I thought I would look at sale trees and just get a new one. I sure don't want a fire hazard. The slim one I liked was $200 half price so NOT! We can do without a new tree.
Ok, I have written a book again when I do get on here so I shall end with Wishing Everyone a Very Special New Year. We have our sage to burn and hopefully will have the greens and black-eyed peas for good luck. It never works but It can't if we don't try!
